Gyeongju beach is not what most visitors expect — but it’s worth the trip. That’s exactly what I always did — sticking to the city center, doing the usual rounds. But this time I decided to skip the familiar loop, got in the car, and just drove toward the sea.
I ended up at Oryugo Ara Beach — and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much. What I found made me stop and look twice.

What Is Oryugo Ara Beach?
Formerly called Oryu Beach, this spot got its new name in 2011. “Goara” comes from a native Korean expression meaning “fine sand” — a fitting name for a beach that combines both smooth sand and rounded pebbles (called mongdol).
Located north of Gampo Port, it’s relatively off the radar compared to Korea’s more well-known beaches. On the weekday I visited, the long stretch of shoreline felt almost entirely to ourselves.

The Water — Clearer Than You’d Expect
This was the part that surprised me most. The water is genuinely clear — on a sunny day, what you see in front of you matches almost exactly what your camera captures, with no editing needed. My family joked that it felt like we’d somehow ended up in Southeast Asia.
The shallow depth of around 1.5m makes it comfortable for children to play in, while still being enjoyable for adults.
Sand and Pebbles: Two Beaches in One
The beach isn’t all pebbles or all sand — it’s a mix of both. In the pebble areas, kids can spend a good while throwing stones into the water. Toward the pine forest trail, the sand becomes softer, and this area is apparently popular for sand therapy as well.
The beach stretches about 1km, so there’s enough room to spread out and find your own space even during busier periods.

Getting There and Parking
Parking is straightforward — there’s a free lot right at the beachfront. Just search “Oryugo Ara Beach Parking” in your navigation, or use the address 297-1 Oryu-ri, Gampo-eup.
A convenience store and several restaurants are just a 3-minute walk from the beach, so grabbing a meal after the water is easy.
Camping at Oryugo Ara Beach
If the water and the setting make you want to stay longer — you actually can. The beach has a designated camping area set among pine trees, which provide natural shade and a decent windbreak. You can pitch your own tent or rent a caravan.

Where to Stay Nearby
If camping isn’t your preference, there are pool villas and pension houses within the area. Gampo — a short 10-minute drive away — has additional hotels and fresh seafood restaurants. For families with younger children, having a proper room to come back to after a day at the beach makes things easier.
Pohang is also nearby, which gives you more accommodation and dining options if needed.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind
During peak summer season (July–August), the beach operates water sports including banana boat rides. Outside of peak season, the beach is quieter and facilities more basic, but the water and scenery are the same.
If you’re planning a trip to Gyeongju and have a day or two to spare, it’s worth making the drive out. The city’s historical sites aren’t going anywhere — but a quiet beach day with clear water and a pine forest behind you is something a bit different.
Is Oryugo Ara Beach suitable for young children?
Yes. The water is shallow (around 1.5m deep) and generally calm, and there are both sandy and pebbled areas. Children tend to enjoy throwing the rounded stones into the water.
Can you camp at Oryugo Ara Beach?
Yes. There’s a designated camping area with shared showers and restrooms, set among pine trees near the beach. Both tent sites and caravan rentals are available.
How is the water clarity compared to other Korean beaches?
The water is noticeably clear. On a sunny day with no filters, the color you see in photos matches what’s actually in front of you — which is not something you can say about every Korean beach.
Is parking free at Oryugo Ara Beach?
Yes, there’s a free parking lot right at the beachfront. Search “Oryugo Ara Beach Parking” in your navigation app, or use the address 297-1 Oryu-ri, Gampo-eup.
How do I get to Oryugo Ara Beach from Gyeongju city center?
By car it’s about 39km and takes around 50 minutes. By bus, take Express Bus 1100 from Gyeongju terminal to Gampo Market, then transfer to Bus 800 to the Oryu Beach stop — total around 1 hour 15 minutes.
What are the camping fees at Oryugo Ara Beach?
Camping site fees range from $17–$23 per night depending on season and day of the week. Caravan rentals range from $40–$120 depending on size, season, and day. See the fee table in the camping section above for full details.
