I’d been looking for a place to stay near Hwangnidan-gil. Not a hotel — a hanok. The kind of guesthouse where you sleep on a heated floor and wake up to the sound of nothing in particular. Wonhwaru Gyeongju came up in the search and checked every box: location close to Gyeongju’s main sites, free breakfast included, ondol rooms, private bathroom. I booked it and drove down.
What I didn’t expect was the cat.

The Cat
I opened the main gate, stepped into the courtyard, and was immediately joined by a cat. Not cautiously — enthusiastically. It followed me across the courtyard as I took photos, sat down while I looked around, and generally acted like it had been waiting. The staff mentioned that the cat is a fixture of the place and has become something of a mascot among guests. It’s an affectionate animal and makes the arrival feel warmer than it would otherwise.

About Wonhwaru
Wonhwaru is a traditional Korean hanok guesthouse in Gyeongju, about 3 to 5 minutes by car from the Gyeongju IC. The property sits in a neighborhood where several hanok guesthouses cluster together — you get the feeling of the place before you’ve even stepped inside. The building looks newer than you might expect, but when I mentioned that to the owner, they told me it had been there for quite a while. A recent renovation had cleaned it up.
Seven rooms in total, divided into couple rooms and family rooms. All of them come with free breakfast. The room names — Hwangnyong, Namsan, Oreung, Alcheon, Gyerim, Banwolseong, Pochokjeong — are drawn from Gyeongju’s historic sites, which is a good sign for a place that takes its setting seriously.

Gyeongju is the kind of city where having a car makes a real difference — the sites are spread out, the roads are quiet, and driving between a royal tomb, a temple, and dinner is genuinely pleasant. If you’re renting one, the proximity to the IC from Wonhwaru means you can be on the road in minutes.
By public transport from Gyeongju Station (KTX), take bus 50 or 51 for 14 stops (about 20 minutes) to the Express/Intercity Bus Terminal, walk 450 meters to the next stop, then take bus 500 or 508 for 7 stops (about 10 minutes) to Najeong Entrance and walk 200 meters. From Gyeongju Bus Terminal or Hwangnidan-gil, bus 500 or 508 gets you there in under 15 minutes including the walk. By taxi from Gyeongju Station, expect approximately ₩17,000 (approx. $11.33 USD).

The Room
I was assigned the Hwangnyong room — a couple room. The staff actually moved me from the originally assigned room to this one, thinking it would be quieter. A small thing, but the kind of attention that registers.
The room is ondol-style: no bed, sleeping on the floor, which is how hanok stays traditionally work. The underfloor heating here is genuine — warm and consistent, not something you have to wait for. Under the bedding there’s a 7cm queen-size topper, so the floor doesn’t feel like a floor. It’s comfortable in a way that catches you off guard.

| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sleeping arrangement | Ondol floor with 7cm queen topper |
| Bathroom | Private, en suite, with powder room |
| TV | Smart TV with Netflix (personal account login required) |
| Air conditioning | Yes |
| Refrigerator | Yes |
| Amenities | Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, hair dryer, towels (2 per person), bottled water |

The bathroom has its own powder room area before the shower — an unusual layout for a hanok that most guests will appreciate. Water pressure is strong and hot water is immediate.
Sleeping on an ondol floor sounds like a compromise, but it isn’t. The warmth comes from below, the room is quiet, and once you’re down, you stay down.

The Café and Common Space
Adjacent to the rooms is a café space that stays open until 22:30. Coffee and tea are free. There’s a microwave, a water dispenser, a first aid kit, and glasses for wine and beer if you’re bringing something back. It’s a genuinely useful space for winding down in the evening or continuing a work session after dinner.

At night, the whole property lights up — the wooden eaves, the courtyard, the café windows. It’s the kind of thing that’s difficult to photograph well but easy to remember. I sat outside after dark and didn’t particularly want to go in.

Breakfast
Breakfast is included in the rate and served at 9:00 AM in the café space. If you’re not eating, let the staff know by text the night before or before 7 AM on the morning.
What arrived: a sandwich, fruit, a boiled egg, salad, and your choice of coffee, juice, or other drinks from the station. The portion is more than it sounds — filling without being heavy. I usually skip breakfast entirely, and I finished everything here.
The morning light through the café windows onto the courtyard is worth being awake for. It’s the kind of scene that makes a two-hour drive feel worth it.
What’s Nearby
The location works particularly well if you’re spending a full day in Gyeongju. The main cluster of sites — Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Banwolseong, Hwangnidan-gil — is about 10 minutes by car. Bomun Lake is 15 minutes. Bulguksa is 20.

For something more immersive in the evening, Cosmic Resort is about 20 minutes away and worth checking before your visit.

For a proper sit-down meal nearby, Handassot is about 10 minutes away — a restaurant known for its stone pot rice that’s worth planning around rather than stumbling into.

If you want a café stop with atmosphere, Bichae Bogette on Hwangnidan-gil is about the same distance.
Final Thought
Wonhwaru isn’t trying to be a boutique hotel. It’s a hanok guesthouse that takes what a hanok guesthouse should be seriously: clean rooms, good bedding, a private bathroom, free breakfast, attentive staff, and a location that makes Gyeongju accessible without being in the middle of it. The cat is a bonus.
If the reason you’re coming to Gyeongju is to slow down and feel where you are, Wonhwaru is built for that.
